PBNs were banned from Google search back in September 2014. Since then, many SEO specialists have abandoned the use of personal domain networks due to the threat of sanctions from Google. At the same time, many professionals continue to use them to promote their sites - even world-famous specialists like Neil Patel do this . Thus, PBNs no longer belong to the white-hat SEO category, but they are not a black-hat SEO technique. In other words, building a blog network is one of the “gray” promotion methods.
In this article, we will try to consider the most important aspects of building a PBN and tell our readers whether it is worth launching such a network for their site and if not, then why.
What is PBN?
PBN (Private Blog Network) is a network of private blogs or blog-oriented sites on page seo service that have a common owner. Such networks include either sites on free web 2.0 platforms (currently an archaism), or sites on a separate hosting, personal blogs.
A network of private blogs is built around a main site that needs to get quality link mass and traffic.
Ideally, PBNs are set up in such a way that it is impossible to trace their common owner, which can give the impression that all these sites do not belong to the same group.

For a site that needs to be monetized, three blogs are purchased from which traffic will come and which will provide link mass;
For each of the three blogs, two more blogs are purchased, which also provide traffic and link mass to these three sites;
Thus, the lowest level blogs are “pumped up” with link mass and direct traffic to mid-level blogs, and they, in turn, redirect the generated traffic and transfer the link mass to the main site that needs to be monetized.
Each satellite builds its own link mass by receiving backlinks from authoritative sources and traffic from social networks and organic search.
Ultimately, this allows you to manipulate the link mass, significantly increasing it for the monetized site, and also redirects all generated traffic directly to the site providing goods and services.
Why did Google prohibit this?
The answer is partly contained in the previous paragraph: this allows you to manipulate the link mass, thereby artificially increasing it and gaining advantages in organic search. In turn, the link mass is one of the main factors in ranking a site in Google.

Finally, such a method can be used (and is successfully used) by sites that are not aimed at providing quality goods or services to search engine users, which in turn negatively affects the search engine ranking as a whole.
When does PBN lead to Google penalties?
There is a high probability of receiving PS sanctions and subsequent de-indexing of the site in the following cases:
You are engaged in selling links from PBN;
Satellite blogs contain low quality content;
The same IP address is used for satellites;
The same Whois information is used for each domain;
For promotion, drop domains were purchased that had previously received PS sanctions;
Contains a large number of spam links;
The same anchor text is used throughout the PBN.
In addition, one of the main conditions that increases the risk of a site being filtered is excessive use of link mass from a private blog network.
This issue was examined in detail by Nathan Gotch , one of the leading Western SEO specialists. According to his research, to successfully promote a project using PBN, it is necessary to use no more than 10-20% of the link mass from satellites in the total link mass. Once again: the most correct option for forming the link mass of the promoted site involves diversifying backlinks according to the principle: 80-90% natural link mass and 10-20% links from PBN. If you use 100% links from PBN, then the probability of receiving PS sanctions is extremely high.
